Care for your Wei Qi

Here are guidelines for balancing an aspect of qi called Wei Qi - which is not only responsible for healthy immune function but also many parts of wellbeing.

What is Wei Qi?

  • Circulates through Sinew channels just below the surface of the skin and the fascial lining surrounding muscles

  • Regulates immune system

  • Governs sleep-wake cycles (diurnal rhythm)

  • Regulates smooth muscle function

  • Maintains posture via Sinew channels

Symptoms of Obstructed Wei Qi circulation

  • Pain

  • Tension

  • Frequent colds and flu

  • Disrupted sleep cycles

  • Bowel, bladder, or uterine issues

  • Heart rhythm issues

Causes of poor Wei Qi circulation

  • Liver Blood circulation: Stress, sedentary, toxicity

  • Kidney Yang (adrenals) depleted: Overwork, late nights, too long in front of screens

  • Insufficient Stomach fluid: infrequent water consumption, chronic dehydration

  • Lung Qi diffusion: Shallow breathing, suppressed grief, inability to let go, harshly judging oneself or others.

Caring for Wei Qi

  • If possible, soak for 20 minutes in a warm bath with Epsom salts for 3 days following treatment. Repeat 2-3 times per week afterward.

  • Drink 1-2 glasses of room temp of war first thing in the morning (activates Wei Qi circulation in Large Intestine sinew channel).

  • Drink 1-2 glasses water every 2 hours or so (nourishes Stomach fluids; circulates Wei Qi)

  • Lie down 10-15 mins every 1-2 hours (nourished Lung. Synchronises Kid yang with Liver blood)

  • Warm and wet foods (porridge, stew, soup, broth)

  • If you're not particularly active or sporting, then consider consuming fewer grains (wheat, rice) and beans, as these can be over-stimulating to your Wei qi and create inflammation.

  • If severe pain/colds and flu sip water every 15 minutes: nourishes St fluids

  • More fats - the raw material for the brain, nerve lining, and hormones (nut butter, ghee, olive oil, avocado, etc)

  • Avoid: cold or raw foods, cold drinks, sugar (inflammatory), gluten (stagnated Wei Qi and inflames), processed foods, microwave, fast and fried foods (deplete Stomach fluids)

  • Sinew release with massage

  • Sinew release qigong exercises twice a day

Perhaps start off with points 2, 3, and 4, then build up over time.
